Recently we've been making the final tweaks to a new Spanish Big Night In box, and what better way to celebrate its arrival than a delicious Spanish fiesta?! So without further ado we picked a date, emailed local customers and invited them to a pop-up restaurant here at the Spicery HQ, featuring the menu from the new 'La Gran Fiesta de la Paella' Big Night In!
Patatas Bravas, Braised Chorizo and Butterbeans, Grilled Green Veg, Salsa de Romesco, Allioli ~ Valencian Paella with Allioli ~ Churros with Cinnamon Hot Chocolate
And so began a whirlwind of activity... peppers were sliced, patatas were fried, and staff scoured the building for every last paprika tin available. (Note: these make excellent tealight holders).
here were a few minor dramas along the way, mostly involving deep-frying for over an hour on an exceedingly warm day, but by the time our guests arrived everything was calm and collected, if not cool.
James started the night off by giving a personal tour of the Spicery (showing off bits of machinery like the noodle-stir-fry spice-toasting machine, and corners of the warehouse filled with sacks marked 'Indonesia'). Then followed the feast!
Tung, Andrea, Josh and James were scattered around the table enjoying the evening and they picked up bits of customer feedback here and there - "The food feedback was 100% positive!" raved Tung. "We had a lady here from Malaga who said that the patatas bravas and allioli were just like she would have back home!" Big thumbs up from Tung.
It's always great to chat to customers, and to see where all these spiceboxes go to and how much they are enjoyed!
Of course, one of the best bits about doing a pop-up is cooking in absurd quantities - here's one of the 5 enormous paellas that we juggled stovespace to make, and also the churro mountain that became dessert.
In Josh's words: "The churros...big hit. Only a handful of people could refuse seconds, thirds or fifths." Thanks for coming, everyone! We'll have another pop-up a little later in the year, with another delicious theme - so if you've missed out but want to come next time, drop us an email and we can make it happen.
