The origin of the Chinese five spice blend is shrouded in mystery but it is believed the Chinese were trying to create a Wonder Powder which would consist of all five flavour groups: sour, bitter, sweet, umami and salty. A delicious blend of earthy spices such as cloves, cinnamon and star anise form a lip-licking combination of tastes which transform any meal into a traditional Chinese feast. In many ways the Chinese conquered this successfully - despite the fact that the origins of the powder may be lost, this magnificent blend has stood the test of time.
