The name of this hearty dish from Southern Turkey derives from the larger dumplings (the mothers) being cooked alongside the smaller chickpeas (the daughters)! It's a really satisfying meal in a bowl, with a fabulous mix of textures and flavours achieved from some very humble ingredients.

  • 1 onion
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 150g kale or winter greens
  • 1 lemon
  • 150g natural yogurt (full fat is best)
  • 50g butter
  • 1 egg (any size)
  • 2 tbsp tomato puree
  • 400g tin of chickpeas
  • 100g bulgur wheat (fine or coarse)
  • 75g self-raising flour
  • 1 stock cube (chicken or vegetable) (optional)
